What is Mycorrhiza?

The word “mycorrhiza” means fungal root. To be more specific, mycorrhizae are fungi that have a symbiotic relationship with the roots of many plants. The major role of the fungi is to enhance nutrient and water uptake by the host plant by exploiting a larger volume of soil than roots alone can do. In some more complex relationships, mycorrhizal fungi do not just collect immobilised soil nutrients, but connect individual plants together by mycorrhizal networks that transport water, carbon, and other nutrients directly from plant to plant through underground hyphal networks.
